Traditionally, the architect has been responsible for the construction not only of buildings intended to last, but of ephemeral installations designed for festive and the commemorative purposes. In these cases, the aim of focusing attention on the event, on the one hand, and the less demanding construction requirements of such temporary installations, on the other, tend to mean more freedom to experiment with space and with the languages of architecture. 'Architects on Stage' brings together material seldom published before, featuring exhibition design and scenography projects from the 90s by architects of recognized international prestige such as Coop.Himmelb (I)au, Diller & Scofidio, Frank Gehry, Toyo Ito, Jean Nouvel and John Pawson. The works presented cover a broad spectrum of ephemeral interventions, both interior and exterior, for shows and events both large and small in theatres, in museums and in the city.
