Description: This is a detailed atlas of the joints and the structures between the joints of the peripheral skeleton, using close correlation of MRI and specimen photography. The first edition was published in 1991.Purpose: During the past decade, MRI has become the primary diagnostic tool in the assessment of many musculoskeletal disorders, as well as in the staging of disease and monitoring of the effects of therapy. Because of these factors, detailed, normal anatomy as displayed by MRI is invaluable for accurate interpretation of the images. The purpose of this book is to supply the reader with a thorough and detailed knowledge of the anatomical structures of the extremities, with schematic and photographic correlation. The authors have achieved their objectives in a clear, simple, and accurate manner. It is a worthy addition to the library of any healthcare provider that deals with the musculoskeletal system.Audience: The author's target audience is mainly radiologists, in particular, those who deal with musculoskeletal radiology. However, I feel this book is of use to medical students for learning anatomy, orthopedic surgeons to use in clinical practice, as well as all radiologists. All three contributors are well known in the field of radiology, and in particular, musculoskeletal radiology.Features: The book covers detailed anatomy of the joints of the extremities directly correlating MRI and specimen photography of cadaveric limbs. However, four new supplemental chapters were added to cover the anatomic features of those structures ofthe extremities between the joints. For these delicate areas, in vivo imaging of normal participants was correlated with schematic drawings. At each anatomic level, both MRI and schematic/photographic illustrations appear, with a line drawing to indicate location and orientation of the section. To facilitate differentiation of structures, identical colors are used in the anatomic drawings.Assessment: This is a wonderfully made and organized atlas, supplied in a compact manner that is simple and easy to use. The additional chapters are a valuable and much needed addition to an already well made book. The MRI images are very clear, and the schematic/photographic correlations exact. It has been an invaluable companion in my musculoskeletal training and in my practice.
